Vintage Moroccan Rugs at A New Tribe on Hackney Road

Founded by Ella Jones in 2016, A New Tribe has become a Hackney Road staple in London. Visitors can shop for ceramics, home textiles and A New Tribe's famous Moroccan Berber rugs - all from independent brands.

A New Tribe shop sources Moroccan Rugs, with an extensive collection of vintage and new Boujad, Azilal and Beni Ourain rugs that are all one of a kind. Offering such a wide range of vintage authentic Berber rugs, it's a shop you don't want to miss if you're in London. A New Tribe's storefront is inviting and warm, leaving an urge to buy Moroccan rugs for every room in your house. Fortunately, they sell bath mats, too - although not Moroccan.

The shop has spent a plethora of years working with the craftsmen of Morocco, who weave their in-house rugs. They also source one-of-a-kind vintage pieces from the Berber providing customers with a wide range of home textiles to choose from. Berber rugs are synonymous with all Moroccan rugs. Traditionally the rugs were made only by women for the purpose of their own homes but have risen to commercial love around the globe. They are made from different tribes and come in distinct styles due to local resources, native plants and climates in each - and no rug is ever the same as they are handcrafted. Here's some more great 'pub quiz' knowledge, each Moroccan Berber rug takes about 20-30 days to be hand-woven!

At A New Tribe you can find Azilal rugs from the High Atlas, and you can identify this type of rug through its light shade of white or softness of cream, and brightly tinted wool.

Boujad rugs from Central Plains and is a frequent product at the shop as well. They often appear in warm red, pink and orange hues. They usually require less wool as their knots are pulled tighter.

Beni Ourain Moroccan rugs are from the Middle Atlas and usually feature a muted colour palette. If you find a Berber in a sandy cream, the chances are it's a Beni Ourain.

The final type of rug (for now) you will find at the London-based store is the Beni Mguild, created in the Middle Atlas. The Moroccan rugs have a plush, thick weave and come in shades of blue, purple, brown and red.

In addition to the new and vintage Moroccan rugs, you can discover independent brands like LRNCE, with beautiful ceramic pots and rustic vases. It's a shop you find homeware you didn't know you needed like blankets that function as wall hangings from BFGF featuring people in nature - along with a Nike-clad ceramic vase and Lisa Simpson.

Visit their online store or Hackney Road shop to learn more about the story behind their beautiful products and how they highlight independent designers and artisans be it in London or Marrakesh.
